Why Do We Need Better Schools

Over the past decade Australian students have fallen from 2nd to 7th in reading, and 5th to 13th in maths compared to students in other countries, and too many Australian kids are being left behind in education.

We know that the Australian economy is a world beater. But we also know that to keep winning the economic race, we have to win the education race.

That’s why we kicked off the first comprehensive review of Australian schools in 40 years known as the Gonski Review, which told us our school funding system is broken.

Based on this review and further work with education stakeholders the Australian Government has developed a National Plan for School Improvement which will ensure Australia can win the education race and the economic race and ensure every Australian child reaches their potential.
